Why is my skin suddenly drier during menopause?
Around and after menopause, lower estrogen is associated with changes in the dermis, epidermis, oil production, and the skin barrier. That can make familiar routines feel less comfortable and can increase the sense of dryness.
It is not the only explanation. Weather, hot water, frequent cleansing, medicines, eczema, contact allergy, and other conditions can feel similar. A useful first step is to note when the change began, where it occurs, and what else changed at the same time.
- Record location and timing.
- Reduce obvious irritants before adding several new products.
- Ask a clinician if dryness is painful, persistent, or accompanied by a rash.
